I served my country in the Army for 9 and 1/2 years and the choice of restauraunts was always the same, Anthony's pizza, burger king or the NCO club. Why is that? Can't they give us soldiers past and present a bit more variety? How do you feel about it?

I think that the bases are only allowed to sell 1 companys food product. When i was station at Camp Pendleton they only had McDonalds, Pizza hut, and taco bell. If you wanted anything else you had to go off base

Where we are, there are 3 Burger Kings. There are also 2 Anthony's Pizzas, a Baskin Robbins, a KFC/Taco Bell combo, 2 Robin Hood sandwich shops, Charley's Cheesesteaks, a Starbucks, a Popeyes, an Einstein Bros Bagels, a Chinese food place, a Subway, a Greek/gyro place, and at least 3 sit-down restaurants. This is a big post though. Our last duty station was a lot smaller, and the options were less varied.

Burger King was just the first to contract with AAFES. More restaurants are just now realizing what a good idea it is to open franchises on military bases.

I did some looking at AAFES and seems that there is an ongoing expansion of new "fast food" options, everywhere. From getting things like Popeye's chicken to a local BBQ "soul food" outlet here at Fort Carson.

BK was the 1st and thus had the contracts. Many if not all are franchises. Major risk for owner and the contract must be "long".

We have a KFC. two burger kings, two pizza places, a BBQ-Soul Food place, one Mexican (Taco John's and it bites), a three sandwich shops, and a breakfast, home cooking place in the troop area next a Chapel, and more to come!

We have an Espresso place, well cart, and I hear that "Starbucks" or a clone is due near the field training areas as a mobile:

The cash outlay for a franchise must be over 180,000, at least,
but I agree the one BK looks like well it is certainly "missed" by the Vets (food inspectors).

I am so "proud" of Fort Carson for the "Soul food", I mean my wife is from Texas: BBQ brisket, ribs, cat fish and all that is "bad" for you! The stuff is rather costly but I do love it.

Blimpes is in the far gate shopette store, a real quality place over "Sub underway" Employ many "army brats", and spouses,
so you cannot chew out that kid as his Dad is the CSM of some infantry unit :-)

What else? Coupons in the weekly flyers, on post deliver for a few, whatever: better the last 18 months and more to come.

As to NCO clubs they were great in the 1950's and 1960's but then they were run by the "NCO Mafia", (no bs), but man those $99 cent steaks and fixnins' - who cared if the slots were rigged?

It's because the military has a contract with BK. Cna you blame them, they make a killing during lunch time. I know our base, Ft. Campbell, has been working on a food court that has a wide variety of foods. It does suck that some bases do not offer a lot of choices for restaurants. A lot of places don't want to set up restaurants on a military base because there are other epxectations that they have to meet beforehand.

No, an effective position to bypass on a date is to a impressive eating position or a movie. Burger King is an area quick-food eating position and is not any longer an effective position to bypass on a date, it basically isn't sensible.

AAFES used to have their own internally operated snack bars. Then the military asked a very good question a few years ago....."Why are we in the food business?" So they contracted it out to private companies and clearly, the restaurants you mention are the ones that got the contract.

How do I feel about it? If you don't like it, don't eat there or go to the mess hall.

The Department of Defense has contracts
with these businesses. BTW, if military personnel do not want to eat at these places,
there's always the Mess Hall that they can eat
at.

BK gives money back to the MWR. They were the only restaurant at the time that would agree to that in the contract with AAFES.
