Lucifer is a Latin word meaning "Light Bearer" and was an ancient Roman name for the planet Venus when it appeared in the morning sky.
The Romans had a story about Lucifer (Venus) trying to rise to the highest place in the day sky, and then being cast down to its position in the night sky, as Mephisto.
Being the idiotic, simple minded, monkey brained literalists that they are, ancient Hebrews, Christians and Muslims could not comprehend that this story about celestial beings was just a metaphor for the movements of the planet Venus, so they incorporated the story into their silly patchwork nemesis called Satan, along with any other misinterpreted story that caught their fancy, ie: The Egyptian Mischief God, Set, The snake from the Epic of Gilgamesh, etc.
Now many of these morons think that this fictional character is trying to influence their decisions, choreograph world events and bring about the apocalypse.
People are such idiots.

I always saw him as being more like the villain in those Dudley Do-right cartoons. I think the dude's name was Nedley.
