Hi everyone,
I know this question has prob been asked before, but I have had a look throught past answers and cant find anything that really fits. My prob is I have really dry cracked hands that bleed and burn, it feels like really bad sunburn. They caome and go getting really bad then going away for months. I have tried changing soaps detergents etc but nothing seems to make a difference. I know this seems trivial but sometimes they hurt so much I feel like crying. Just wondered if anyone knew what caused this and how I can stop it? Any help would be appreciated, thanksXX

You already have some pretty good answers but I thought I would put in my two cents worth. Dry skin is a very common problem. I got it from my mother. She has terribly dry hands and feet, especially her heels. One thing that has not been mentioned is plain ole vaseline or similar product. Sure its greasy but if you want the ultimate protection that is it. Look at the ingredients on most moisturizers and you will find petolatum jelly, may have misspelled that.
Each night rub it on your hands and wear some gloves to bed, same for your feet. I have frequently used it on my legs in the winter when it gets dry. Once spread out it really isn't any worse than anything else and best of all it works. Ask any dematologist and they will tell you the same thing. Bang for the buck it is best. As far as hydrocortisone goes, that is an anti-inflammatory agent, and can help with itching but won't help the dry skin much and can cause side effects if worn for too long and it absorbed into the blood stream, so be careful with that one.

I hope this has helped you, it helps me.

Sometimes becasue of something some parts of your body have gond bad and it keeps bothering you on and off until its cause is completely eliminated. My symptop was not as serious as yours but I had gotten suffered so much from drieness, itchiness and once-in-a-while bleeding all over my body because here, Colorado area is too dry for me. Anyhow I started using a moisture-intensified-lotion for my hands and even when the syptom did not appear I kept using it consistently. Now my hands are OK even when I don't use the lotion. I am really satisfied with it. I have never felt this before with any kinds of lotion, but you can't buy it at a regualr store. If you are interested just send me a message I can give you detail information. Hope you can find a real good cure for you.

Me, too, especially this winter.

I live in Chicago where the winter weather has been very cold. Indoors it's very dry. And, I had been using an antibacterial hand-soap. My hands were red and hurting, so dry they bled.

Solution: 1) I changed from hand soap to Johnson's Baby Wash (soapless). 2) I exfoliated (remove dead skin) my hands every day. This may sound strange, but the top layer of skin is dead. You can use a back brush or loofah. Just gently dry brush your hands (palms and back) before you bathe or shower. 3) Put lotion on hands after every time you wash and anytime hands feel dry. and 4) Sleep wearing cotton gloves - wash your hands, then when your hands are still wet apply baby oil. Wait a few minutes for the baby oil to absorb then generously apply hand lotion. Put on a pair of cotton gloves (you can get these at Bed, Bath and Beyond or Bath and Body Works).

If your feet are dry, you can get some cotton socks, wash feet and put baby oil and lotion on overnight.

You must get hydrocortisone cream the strongest over the counter you can buy. I think it's s 0.5%. rub on at ninth and then put on the rubber gloves doctors use. Not the yellow cleaning gloves. You can buy the doctors gloves at any pharmacy ask pharmacist. They are cheap $5 a box of 100. What happens is you perspire with them on while you sleep and the cream works it';s way in and heals very quickly. This is something you do every night til cleared then as needed. Good Luck

I have the same problem! I find that hydrocortisone cream works well for spot treatment where it is especially dry, and I also use Avon Moisture Therapy Oatmeal Lotion. I know it sounds weird with the oatmeal part, but it's just like normal lotion except it helps more with moisturizing. It works really well in combination with the hydrocortisone.

Well, I have very dry hands that also crack and bleed and itch and hurt.
I have discovered Nuetrogena hand cream Norweigen Formula. It claims to heal dry hands overnight but if it's really bad give it afew days.
It was created by Norweigen fishermen. They're way up north dealing with insane cold and the elements all the time. That's rough, they know what they're talking about!

My husband has the same problem. It gets its worst in winter.

Try drinking extra water to compensate for the dry heat. Also, take a look at the lotions, creams, and oils in your local health food stores. Or look in some farming supply stores: I understand they sometimes carry an exceptionally strong lotion for men who have to do hard work with their hands.

Good luck!
