Windows Media Player can only play a very limited set of media in its default state. It should really be called Windows Some Media Player! The extension to Windows Media Player will make Windows Media Player attempt to play the media that it currently doesn't support. Go ahead and install the extension if you want to use Windows Media Player. You could also use alternate media players.

It is a suplimental app that you will need if you want to play anything other than WMA or WMV files.
Vista and Media Player check for digital signatures to make sure that the video has been digitally signed by Microsoft.
They only want you to play WMA and WMV files with licenses issued by Microsoft so you can expect the video to be degraded by 60% if it cannot verify that it has been digitally signed by Microsoft.
You can expect all of your Video and Audio (music) files to be degraded and corupted by Vista.
That is what Vista does.

Have you tried the Windows Media Center?

It seems to work better with media files

I'm sorry that you are using Vista. There is no way that I would - it doesn't work with too many common applications.

Download it - you'll need it.

You might want to run updates as well - as they have had 18 come out this past week. I use Vista at work for testing software.
