Steam them until they open. And NEVER eat any shellfish that will not open when steamed. This means the creature inside has been dead before you started cooking them, and you don't want to eat it.

The proper way is to cook them until them open. Boil, steam, bake, grill or broil. Once they open, they are done. You can use the cooked muscles in other dished once you've taken them out of the shell. Just toss them in at the very end for no more than 30 seconds of cooking time or they'll get rubbery.

You don't won't a muscles to open up when there not cooked, you really didn't say where theire raw or not so I'm assuming theire raw; when a muscle is open before you steam it ,it's dead; muscles must be tightly closed before you steam them, theire cooked alive, as are clams & lobster.

I believe you're talking about mussels. Just add to boiling , salted water. When the mussels open up then they are done. Remove immediately. Let them cool down a little. Remove the meat and dip in melted butter. Enjoy!!!

I dunno, I'm not into cannibalism.

Muscles can be open or closed? I thought they could only be flexed or relaxed.
