I'm starting University next week and need leave my apartment that I share with my boyfriend as the university is about 7 hours from my house. I have a 1 year old Russian Blue cat that lives inside and his is very much a mummy's boy. He's going to stay with my boyfriend during the semester and i'll see them both when I come back home during the holidays. I'm worried that beacuse i'll be gone for a few months my beautiful cat will forget who I am.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Do cats forget their owners??

My cat Mickey was an indoor cat after a fight with a dog left his hip bone fractured. He mended fine after surgery, but after that he wanted to go outside ONLY in the daytime.

We had had him about 6 years when one day he just vanished. He was like a member of our family and we all were crushed. I ran ads in the news paper for 6 weeks and got a few calls, but none panned out.

Still I didn't think he had died for some reason. But I couldn't imagine he would choose to leave .

After the 7th week was beginning I went into the kitchen at midnight to get something and at the back glass sliding door was a very thin and desperate Mickey! My whole family heard my screaming and we were so excited that he was finally home and ok. He was starved and ate lots of hot dogs we fed him.

After thinking it over and discussing it, we could only think that someone saw him and how big and pretty he was and had taken him. Then either he was put in cage by them or he was trapped somehow for the 6 weeks.

He never forgot us. Pets don't forget their owners. And he looked like he had worked hard and travelled long to find us again.

When you return, you will see how much your cat has missed you!

No, cats do not forget thier owners. Although they might forget you by sight, after a few sniffs of you, they will remember you right away. Although they might not want to talk with you right away, they do remember.
PLEASE NOTE THOUGH: with age, an animals memory will start to faid if not challenged on a regular basis. Your best bet is to ware a shirt for a day or two, and leave it with the cat so that it has a constant reminder of your smell, and some place to go when it misses you.

Hope this helps.

Well I dont think dogs and cats are much different in this case. But when I first got my dog she lived with an owner for about a year. Then she lived with my family for 6 years. Last year the owner came over to see how my dog was doing and as soon as he opened the door, my dog seemed to know who it was. And if you cat is a mommy's boy he will most likey remeber you. Good luck with that.

They certainly do. I have fostered quite a few cats, and sometimes I get to see them later on. After 2 or 3 months, the cats don't seem to recognize me. It's not just me. I've adopted a couple of cats who were fostered by other people, in one case, for 2 years (since a tiny kitten). After I'd had her for a couple of months, I took her to meet her former human. She didn't seem to respond to her at all. Cats don't like change. They're not like dogs and should not be moved around very much unless absolutely necessary.

My cat, "Cassandra", has an excellent memory. She can always find Her way back to Her food bowl from her bed. All 5 feet in distance! Me, of course She remembers by associating with the cat food that 'miraculously' appears 25 times a day!

No, I'm sure it won't. I've had a cat who took himself off for over 8 months, then just strolled back in as if it were only a few hours. It'll be nce for your cat and boyfriend to spend some quality time together.

I believe that your lovely cat will remember you - it is their instinct. My cat had a bad experience early on with the travel cage, i.e. he had to go vet and ever since as soon as he sees the cage .. he runs and has never forgotten. Aside from this, I have left my boy in the cattery while away and as soon as he hears my voice again he comes running out to greet me and is as happy as larry. Don't worry.

My husband works at walgreens in the photolab and one time a lady that went to pick up her pictures told him that in older lady left for a weekend and when she came back the cat jumped on her and scratched her really bad and they had to call the fire department...I guess the cat was mad she left. But I don't know its probably just that cat.

I once had to spend about six months in hospital. When I finally made it back home, my dog didn't recognise me, but my cat did. So much for dogs' memory! I was very surprised.
Therefore, don't worry. He'll know who you are when you come back.
