I live for questions like this!!

Dogs are carnivores and therefore don't actually need grains in their diets. Can they live off of other things? Yes...but they won't get as much proper nutrition from the food and often won't be nearly as healthy.

When choosing a food, you want to completely steer clear of foods with Corn or Sorghum (a corn product). It should list 3 meat products in the first 5 ingredients and the first 2 should be meat.

All ingredients should be identifiable. You want it to list "Chicken Meal" instead of "Poultry Meal" or "Salmon Oil" Instead of "fish oil" and so on and so forth. Since most commercial dog foods have grains, look for foods with barley or rice. Potato is an even better binding agent.

My rule of thumb is that if you can buy it in the grocery store it's like making your dog live off of twinkies. Go to an actual feed store and look around. Foods marketed as "premium" like Eukenuba, Science Diet, Iams, etc are actually crappy foods. Read the labels!

Most vets will recommend Science Diet because they make A LOT of $$$ selling it. They actually receive very minimal education in nutrition during vet school...so take what they say with a grain of salt.

If you go to http://www.dogfoodproject.com it will tell you everything you need to know about picking out a good food. Remember that the price of a high quality food is more per bag but dogs end up eating less (they also poop less since they're using more nutrition from the food) so it helps to balance out the costs.

Good luck!

Well it really all depends on what your dog likes. I have tried almost all of the brands out there. Well the cheap stuff that is. But the one particular dog food that i buy for my dogs now is beneful. they both love it and it is not at all expensive.

I am sure you will choose the right kind of dog food for your dog. Good luck with your search.

Any type of dog food that you like. It is your preference. Different owners buy different brands of dog foods for different reasons.

Lamb & rice with a small kibble is usually good. Ask your vet.
