I have just done it but think I remember hearing somewhere it 'locks in the burn' or some thing like that...

Try this. Fill your sink with iced tea (not the sugary stuff) and ice. Soak a towel or t-shirt in it and lay it on your burned area. Do this for about 90 minutes (re-soaking the towel during this time) and the pain will vanish.

Putting anything thick, like vaseline, on a burn is not good because it does trap the heat in.
As long as it's lotion, such as aloe vera, you should be fine. Try a little & see if it still feels hot.
Either way, burned skin needs moisture, so drink a lot of water.

My dermatologist swears that creating a paste out of asprin and water will take the pain out of a sunburn. (apply the paste to skin and let dry) As for moisture, use aloe vera. It will soothe and moisturize at the same time.

No, there is nothing wrong with applying moisturizer to a sunburn. For your own comfort though, you want to make sure that it is free of strong fragrances/dyes as this would irritate the sunburn. Therefore - make sure you're using a 'moisturizer' and not just some 'lotion'.
