There are varied medications and treatments for relieving the pain caused by shingles. Antiviral Medication (such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir): Steroids(such as prednisone): Nerve Blocks: Pain specialists can inject numbing medications (called local anesthetics). Opioid Medication (narcotics): Tricyclic Antidepressants (such as amitriptyline [Elavil] and nortriptyline [Pamelor]): There are treatments for post herpetic neuralgia, amongst which are Lidocaine patches. Anticonvulsants (such as gabapentin [Neurontin] and carbamazepine [Tegretol]), have been used for many years for this and the recent addition of Neurontin has been effective also. Whilst waiting for an appointment to obtain any of the above, you may find that the application of a plastic skin, like the surgical spray Nebecutane, or painting collodion on the rash will be of assistance.
Hope this helps

There is no medication that acts directly on the pain caused by shingles other than temporary nerve blocks. Analgesics usually provide only a slight reduction in pain. Doctors have prescribed all sorts of medication that seems to help some patients, but none of the medications show significant results when tested in controlled studies. I haven't found anything that works well for me, but I noticed that i am more capable of tolerating the pain when using something like vicoden during the day, and an over-the-counter sleep aid at night.

I had shingles when I was 23. It sucked! I was prescribed vicodin for the pain. Other than that, you just have to tough it out for a couple weeks.

If the over the counter pain relievers aren't working, have your doctor prescribe you something a bit more powerful.

I take a seizure medication called Gabapentin. I noticed that one of it's indications is for herpes related nerve pain. Talk to your doc or pharmacist.
