my dad used an old shoebox and ran laces through it like it was a gigantic shoe. then we could take it with us from room to room and practice on it. when we got the hang of it, we graduated to actually working on our own shoes.

Whatever method you choose to teach ( the standard one or the "bunny ears" one), start by demonstrating the whole thing --start to finish. Then, you do all but the last step ( tightening the loops) Have the child do that step. Repeat that as many times as you need to, until the child can do it. then have the child form the loops and tighten. Then have them do all of it.
Always stop before they get frustrated. And make sure they have a success at the end, even if you have to go back a step.
I think the "bunny ears" method is easier for some kids --- I have taught a 3 year old to do it that way.

I had these boards with shoelaces running though them. My mum bought them at an education store or wal-mart toy section or something. Anyways, you could take the shoe with you and tie it. Everytime we tied it properly until we learned on our own shoes, my mum would give us a smartie or some really small treat.
Also, to teach them, use the bunny method (make two ears) and then graduate them to the proper bow method.

I started my kids out by teaching them to tie the shoes without actually putting them on their feet. It is easier if they learn without having to work around their knees and if they can put the shoe wherever they like.

Give them a shoe and you get a shoe and just keep walking them through the process. It is easier if they are not wearing the shoe.
They also make kids books about this that have laces attatched to it.

you show them !
but when you first teach kids you have to teach them tie their shoes by making two loops and tie them together instead of the one loop one

Sometimes it helps to have someone else teach them. My brother taught my oldest son because he was left handed. I tried to teach him and just couldn't do it. My brother came over one day and that was that. My youngest son, I taught him, his father started to and he just wasn't listening. I sat down and boom it was done.
