The side effects usually subside after 2 weeks or so, once you reach the theraputic level of the drug, you start to get used to it.
I suffered from nausea and a dry mouth for about 2 weeks when I started citalopram and again when I had the dosage increased. I did find that my anxiety and panic attacks were worse whilst on this medication, and if you feel the same, make sure you keep your doctor informed.

I have been on Citalopram for about two years for clinical depression and yes when you first start taking this type of medication there are going to be side-affects. I used to get night sweats and was so tired all the time with no appetite but it soon stopped after about a month and I haven't looked back. The pharmacist told me to take them in the morning, but I get on much better taking them at night. Sometimes the symptoms you are taking them for will seem to get worse, but they should settle down soon. Make sure you are eating regularly, not drinking alcohol and getting enough sleep. I also take high strength omega fish oils which really help - I never thought I would see the day when I wasn't depressed - and here I am.
Best wishes
D.

your best bet is to read the information that is with the medication. The side effects are though. Nausea/vomiting/indigestion/diarrhoea/constipation
The rare ones are Anxiety/insomnia/Headache/tremor/Dizziness/Drwsiness/Dry Mouth/Sweating/Skin rash. It will take up to about 2-4 weeks before you start to feel the proper benifits of the drug. Hope all is well and good luck. Glad you are going to the doctors. Hope you have a nice weekend x

I have been on the same medication for about a year now for depression and the only side affect I noticed was a bit of nusea at the start of the course. My Doctor tried taking me off and all my symptoms reappeared. So I was put back on. I dread coming off the pills altogether.
It is best to see your dr if you are not happy with what is happening to you.

You poor thing!! This will happen for a while. I was on them most of 2005 and up until Feb 06.
It was awful, I actually had to leave work due to thios I couldn't function very well at all, I also had a terrible case of chattering jaws, it was uncontrollable, I would be speaking to someone and my jaws would just chatter by itself.
My doc said perhaps I was ultra sensitive to the pills.
Your GP will probably say it takes a while for these symptoms to go, for me it took months and then they were not gone completely they had just calmed down.
When the time comes for you to come off of them you will have to be weaned off of them, I didn't do this, I was moving house so I forgot to take them but had the same symptoms coming off of them as I did starting them.
I have now been prescribed with Fluoxetine but am scared to take them incase I have the same symptoms as the Citalopram.
Sorry you feel awful, good luck. xxx

im taking citalopram and have been for well over 2 years and i havent had any side effect except sexual related. but it is common to feel anxiety like symptoms which sound like what you are describing in the early stages, im not sure about the feelings in your head but all others are very common, i think its a great idea to check in with your doc

I had the same symptoms but after 2 weeks they went away all except the sweats I still get them, but compared to the zoloft prozac wellbutrin and paxil the citalopram as the lesser of the few side effects.

You sound like you might need a different medication. I've been on Citalopram (for OCD) for about 10 years (20 mgs.) w/no side effects whatsoever. Good luck!

In the first couple of days, I had a severe and uncontrollable tremor, particularly in my hands. Now my main complaint is poor sleep- I usually wake up after just a few hours then can't get back to sleep again.
