His mission to Earth was finished. Some say it meant "paid in full" - some say it meant that Jesus was speaking about paying for our sins. Jesus talked about the remission of sins, but he did not use the hebrew or greek word for "sacrificial remission" rather the word he used meant "change of life remission, as in to be born again into a new spirit, a new justice system that denied anyones right to hold a grudge against anyone else.
Jesus said, "If you do not forgive others, your father in Heaven will not forgive you."
That is the clearest verse in the Bible. But, it is almost impossible to forgive someone who has hurt you unless you have been born again into a spirit of forgiveness.

Paid in Full. The sins of man (all men, everywhere for all time) are redeemed in this action. The rightful wraith of God is appeased by the one thing that could be acceptable the blood of His only Begotten Son. On the cross and with his death Jesus paid the price for our Sins. With our Debt Paid in Full His Resurrection allows us the opportunity of eternity

I agree with father K, it is finished, the work done, nothing more needs to be done for the forgiveness of sin for the believers, the elect, the Church.

"The debt has been paid in full" The term is from the Greek and was a term of commerce. If you had a bill - and you paid it - I would stamp it with my seal and mark it "tetelestai"...
The English, "It is finished" - well, I find that lacking.

“It has been accomplished!” He has finished everything that his Father has sent him to earth to do. Finally, he says: “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Jesus thereby commits to God his life-force in confidence that God will restore it to him again. Then he bows his head and dies.
