There are ear drops available over the counter that will help with the earache. Also try a heating pad or hot water bottle.
Has your doctor determined the cause for the earaches? I have had a long history of ear problems since childhood. I have small Eustachian tubes and they would be blocked due to sinus and throat swelling whenever I got a cold resulting in a condition called media otosis - fluid in the middle ear behind the ear drum. This in turn caused pain and hearing loss and sometimes infection until the ear finally drained. Tubes can be inserted into the eardrums (my son had an adnoidectomy as well) to drain them. In children, the tubes are not permanent and will eventually work their way out as the ear grows.
I just recently (last July) had a tube put in my right ear to help it drain and have had no problems since. Fantastic, no more blockages for months at a time! I wish I had it done years ago.

do not put heat any where near your sons ear,,,,the heat will feel like it is working but it will only make it worse. if your son has had many ear infections, then i would take him to a specialist, he may have his adnoids glands removed,,they are often what causes ear infections, he may also need tubes put into his ear,,they may not be draining properly. for right now you can give him some childrens tylnol,,,nothing makes an ear infection go away, the medicine only helps with the pain, the infection will go on its own. I would really consider going to a specialist, your son may even have a bit of a hearing problem, which you may not even be aware of due to the fluid in his ears!

Could be caused by hardened wax buildup. You can get a free hearing test and complete checkup for him at a place that sells hearing aids. If he has hardened wax plugs in his ears, then go to a pharmacy and get some sterile olive oil. Warm the bottle in a cup of hot water and use an eyedropper to put a few drops in each ear. This will loosen the wax which will then slide out on its own. I did this many time for my son when he was your son's age.

Onions are in the garlic family and both have curative powers.
I bake or microwave an onion and use the juice like ear drops.
The other thing you can do with the onion is to cut it in half and hold it to the ear while he falls asleep with his head on your lap.
It will require a shower in the morning because of the white film and smell.

Heat over the ears helps. Like taking a hair dryer and blowing hot air around and in the ears.
