An MFA is a Master of Fine Arts; and can only be obtained after a Bachelor's program is completed.
It's also a terminal degree, which means that entrance into a PhD program will probably not be as good than if one simply had a Master's degree. The reason for this is because, due to the work load and concentration of study, an MFA is, in reality, about as good as a PhD only without the extra schooling and prestige of the title of doctor.
In a university's eyes, professors with an MFA can usually rise above adjunct status but perhaps not acquire the highest level of professorship.

MFA stands for Master of Fine Arts. You can only obtain this if you already have a bachelor's degree (i think?) and it's more advanced than a Master of Arts. Fine Arts usually means conservatory work.
