An MFA is a Master of Fine Arts; and can only be obtained after a Bachelor's program is completed.
It's also a terminal degree, which means that entrance into a PhD program will probably not be as good than if one simply had a Master's degree. The reason for this is because, due to the work load and concentration of study, an MFA is, in reality, about as good as a PhD only without the extra schooling and prestige of the title of doctor.
In a university's eyes, professors with an MFA can usually rise above adjunct status but perhaps not acquire the highest level of professorship.
Hope this helps! :)

MFA stands for Master of Fine Arts. You can only obtain this if you already have a bachelor's degree (i think?) and it's more advanced than a Master of Arts. Fine Arts usually means conservatory work.
