I am a high school student who has to take photos of the upcoming field trip to Florida. We will be flying from TEXAS. I will be bringing a EOS digital Canon Rebel with lens. I am worried that since the camera is so big, that somebody will try to steal it! Any Suggestions? Also, if I want to go on a ride, and I have my gigantic camera with me, what do I do with the camera? Do I hold on to it during the ride?
Finally, is there any gear that I can get that will prevent me from losing the camera? The camera is quite expensive.

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're not leaving your camera completely unattended, I'm sure it won't get stolen. As others have mentioend, since it's a school trip, if there's a teacher or chaperone not going on the ride maybe they could hold it for you. All of the rides have baskets or holding areas anyway, though. For example, on DINOSAUR there is a pull out basket that can hold a large camera. On Kali River Rapis there's a compartment in the center of the raft to hold everyone's bags and belonging so they do not get wet or damaged. I imagine you could probably have a Cast Member look after your camera as well. There are Cast Members at the loading areas for each ride. Explain to them that you have a large, valuable camera that you're worried about, and as if they'd be able to keep an eye on it for a few minute while you're on the ride. I'm sure mothers carrying larger items like diaper bags do it all the time.

Hope I could help! Have a great time!

As a photo teacher, (and someone who goes to Disney every year) I think you SHOULD take the camera! But here's how to be careful:

Buy a good tamrac camera bag, like the Tamrac Travel Pack 71, Compact Photo Backpack (amazon.com has it for around $35). This will protect your camera during travel on the airplane AND on rides. (I've never had a problem holding onto a camera in a case on a ride).

If you only have one lens, there should even be room in the bag for some stuff of your own. That way, the camera will be safely with you.

I've never had problems with theft of anything at Disney (the airport is more of a concern)...my mother lost her camera and someone turned it in to Disney and they brought it to the front desk where we stayed.

In general, buy a good camera backpack and just be aware and safe. Have fun and take some AWESOME pictures :)

You'll be fine. Disney is not a high crime area. You will see hundreds of nice cameras there.
Do pack a good plastic bag in your camera pack or pocket, though. It rains a lot in Orlando, and you'll need to stash it in the bag to keep it dry!
There may be some rides that could pose a problem with carrying a big camera. I don't ride much at Disney, so someone else can answer that!
Take your camera and enjoy your trip!

while i have never been to disney, i have traveled many places around the world with a SLR, with no problems, when i am out and about, i sling the camera over my right shoulder, with my head and left arm going through the strap, and i keep my left hand on the camera at almost all times. if i am making a purchase or doing something else that requires two hands, i shift the camera around to the front of me so i can see it while i am doing whatever. if you are going to carry it in a backpack, put it near the bottom of the backpack with stuff like a rain jacket on top, and always travel in groups, so you minimize the chance of a dextrous pickpocket getting it out of your backpack without your knowledge, which CAN happen. while going on rides, you can always ask a teacher or a trusted friend to hold the camera for you if they arent going on the ride.

First of all keep it away from Mickey. When going on rides purchase a locker or lock box within the theme park. Ask someone that works there where they are located.

If you do take it.... wear it around your neck to the front... Have someone you trust hold it for the ride or you may be able to take it with you.

Also... they have lockers at Disney parks that you can use to stash it in when tired of carrying it.

Don't take the camera, if you don't want to lose it or have it stolen. Ask one of the teachers on the trip to hold the camera until you need it to take pictures.

Buy a cheap 5 megapixel...Check the big boy in your room or with front desk. Or leave it at home.
