There are thousands of variants, although the most popular is called Texas Hold'em.
Before turning pro, my friends and I used to play some crazy games like Pineapple, Ding-a-ling, Follow-the-queens, and such.
One of the great things about poker is that there are so many variants. If you're looking to improve, I would suggest starting with Texas Hold'em -- it is a very intriguing game and there is plenty of material out there that can teach you to play a decent game in a short amount of time.

off the top of my head.
1.Texas hold 'em
2.Omaha and 8/b
3.stud-7 card or 5 card and 8/b
4.razz which is basically 8/b only
5.draw
6.HORSE which is a combination of some of the above
8/b is called "8's or better" aka "low" the best 8/b hand being A,2,3,4,5
there are many more variations I'm sure but this is all i can think off that are mainstream
