Usually, my cat (neutered male, about 7/8 y.o, adopted about 5 years ago) is rather noisy - doesn't wail, but makes himself heard if he wants something. However for almost a week now, he has taken on a pitifully weak miaow. He is still eating, and looks in good condition. The kitchen is being redecorated, but this souldn't be a problem for him, as over the five years there has been quite a bit of renovation. Any ideas why he has gone quiet?

All those who said to see a vet are probably right. It could be a reaction to glue/paint/varnish/stripper/etc being used in the kitchen. Watch out for an upper respitory (sp) condition. Check his gums to see if they have changed color, that may indicate a toxin in his system. Also check the litter box for changes.

If the vet finds nothing wrong I would use a natural clay detoxifier just to make sure. It's cheap insurance. Look for Terramin or Nutramin clay at your health food store. One teaspoon mixed in the food will flush out most toxins.

Kitchen and bathrooms seem to have the most toxins due to the type of flooring, wall coverings and counter top glues.

He's a cat! Aside from noticing any health issues (its not a bad idea if you can afford it to get a basic checkup done on him and maybe a little bloodwork) he is most likely fine and just being a cat. I have had cats all my life used to breed old farm cats as a kid and currently have two I have had since I was in grade school. One of them is a silver tabby around 12 years old now. A few years ago all of a sudden he started acting terrified ALL the time!!! He would constantly be freaked out and hiding! I took him to the Dr convinced he was dying and he was fine after a few weeks (and I was out several hundred dollars for nothing!) It was really weird at the time but I have since realized cats are just there own deal, and wonderfully entertaining and very unexplainable sometimes so I would give him a little more love and then wait it out a week or two.

I would not rule out stress due to the renovation work. Just becuase he has gone through the same stuff before and was OK, doesn't mean the cat is not feeling some anxiety this last time - cats are funny hat way. Since he is eating and rinking and voiding normally, the stress may be just low-level. Why not confine him in his favorite room in the house where he is assured quiet and peace when work is being done in the kitchen during the day time? I always guard or minimize potential stressors by confining my cats in my bedrom whenever I know we will have some "to do" in the house (parties, visitors, spring-cleaning, maintenance work, etc.). No matter how "tough" oooking, cats absolutely hate noise, chaos, strange goings-ons.

This could be a lot of things. It could mean that he is not much in a talkative mood, he is maturing, he may have a sore throat from dust from the kitchen renovation, etc.

He may be sick. My cat acts different like this when she is not feeling well. Have you noticed any extra stinky poo, a cough, goopy eyes, dandruff......any thing out of the ordinary? If not, then chalk it up to a cat who's tired of the uproar in his atmosphere (the remodeling) but keep a close eye just to be sure.
