When I watch a dog show, all the Pekes have extremely thick flowing hair - or fur. Our Pekingese has short hair around her ears and only moderate length fur on the rest of her body...her tail is very thick and bushy. But I was wondering because I have never heard of any breed variations. Does anyone know about this?

Sure, there are always breed variations. One such variation would be the thickness and amount of hairs, which would account for the short hair on and around her ears.

As others have said, if you are not going to show your dog, there is no reason for concern, and your dog is totally normal. Even with champion parents, deviations from the breed standard can and do occur. To assume that you got your dog from a puppymill because it isn't 100% true to the standard is absurd and don't let anyone make you feel bad about your dog.

Pekingeses can come with variations. Also, it depends on how old your peke is. My peke had short hair on her ears and body when she was a pup, but now that she's grown she has really long hair.

The dogs on TV dog shows are bred for the coats and some breeder do this thing I call shiver them out and that means cold water wash and cold dry and that is how they give there dogs those great coats. They also don't touch them alot. If you want to show the dog be concerned but if not be thankful because that more hair she/he has the more it will be all over your house. It is also easier for you to groom with less hair.

Mine never had the "mop" look like the show dogs, yet the vet thought he was a very good looking Peke. If you think about it, how many Pekes have you seen in person that DO look like that?

What you see on like the Westminster dog show doenst mean your dog needs to look like that. If you wanna show your dog, then yes. But as a pet, you can give him any kind of haircut you want.

I also have a pekingnese and he has a short haircut.
heres a picture :]
