I like to add just a touch of vanilla sugar. (That's just regular sugar - or you can use raw sugar - that you put whole vanilla bean in. After about a week the vanilla has flavoured all the sugar. Just keep the bean in there and periodically refill the sugar as needed, one bean will flavour a LOT of sugar before you eventually have to change it!)
Also, if you use frozen raspberries in your fruit salad, as they defrost they make a gorgeous red syrup that turns your salad pink! I usually use raspberries, some pineapple, seedless grapes halved, chopped apple and mandarin oranges from a can. That's the base, then if there's other fruit around that looks good I'll add it in too. Just not melons, they give a funny taste to fruit salad.
And if you want to add bananas, Make your salad up ahead of time but only slice and stir in the bananas at the last second or you'll have mush.

What you need:
2 (15.25 ounce) cans fruit cocktail, drained
3 large bananas, peeled and sliced
1 (10 ounce) jar maraschino cherries, halved
1/2 pint heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
What you do:
In a large bowl, combine fruit cocktail, bananas and cherries. Reserve 3 slices of banana and 1 cherry for garnish.
In a mixing bowl, whip the cream to soft peaks with an electric mixer. Add sugar and vanilla, and whip to combine.
Fold the whipped cream into the fruit. Garnish with a fan of banana slices. Place cherry at the bottom of the banana fan.
You can also add mini marshmellows, coconut, and manderine oranges.

okay, after you make this, to a person who has never seen it before, it will look strange. i had that problem the first time i made this, no body wanted to eat it because of how it looked, but once i got them to taste it, they loved it and i think you will too. heres what you need:
2 navel oranges
2 fugi or gala apples (or whatever ones you like best)
2 large bananas
about 20-30 strawberries
1 small container (thawed) cool whip
heres what you do:
just take all the fruits and cut them up to however large or small you would like them and mix it all together with some cool whip
if you dont want that much, use only one of each fruit. you can add grapes sliced in half if you'd like to.
the frist time i ate this, i didnt want to at first because it looked strange, but my husband made me so i didnt hurt his granny's feelings and after that first bite, i have made my own several times trying different fruits each time

Chopped pecans and those little oranges makes a fruit salad "yummy" in my opinion. : )

Whipped cream on top! I usually have canned pineapple with its own juice, strawberries, peaches, and grapes in mine...I use the pineapple juice to sweeten the rest of the fruit.
