If you want a tattoo that has meaning then you have to look within yourself..... Think about the most traumatic thing that has ever happened to you and base a tattoo around that event....nothing traumatic? Then someone really close to you has passed on that you could memorialize? Maybe a pet that was special to you?........Are you struggling with any secret addictions or hidden demons in your life? ...If so get them out there on your skin..hobbies, favorite sports, your heritage, a quote the means something to you.....Maybe a tattoo that has something to do with your profession......Rough out an idea in your head of what you want and any competent artist will sit down with you and work out a final design. If the tattoo has meaning for you then you will love it all the more. All that aside....there is no reason to get into big rush. Take your time and look at tattoos.....lots of tattoos ....tattoos of every style, size and shape. After you have spent days looking at hundreds and hundreds of tattoos....you're going to notice a couple of things. 1) After looking at all those tattoos you're going to find that the tattoos you thought looked sooooo cool when you first started looking, probably won't look as good as they first did. (you are going to become more discriminating) and 2), There is going to be a style or theme that you just keep coming back to.. This will help you narrow down your style. Here are a few places to start
www.tattooartists.org A very good site over a thousand galleries. Only artists can upload on this site.
www.ratemyink.com This site will take an upload from anybody with a computer...you will see some really good tattoos and you will see some real stinkers. Look at those stinkers carefully.. THATS what you're going to end up with if you don't use the best artist you can find.

I hope this helps.

The whole pregnancy thing really depends on how elastic your skin is, and you can't really tell what it's going to do untill you are pregnant. Most of the time a tattoo in that area will go right back to how it was after you have your baby, but sometimes they'll get distorted or get a stretch mark through them. Again, you can't really tell before hand. If you're talking about putting it on the front of your hip I'd say the same thing, it ALL gets stretched when you're 9 mos pregnant. Even the skin on your back does some stretching, though not quite as much as the front. I recently got one done on the lower part of my waist on the side of my back, but I've already had one baby, so I know where and how I stretch. If you want it there, I'd say go for it though, just make sure if you do get pregnant that you keep it moisturized ALL the time (I'd recommend cocoa butter and vitamin E) and you should be okay. Good luck with your ink.

Think about people, things or memories that are special to you. Maybe your dead grandma, or your little brother. Anybody except a significant other, because you can almost guarantee that the tatoo will be around longer than the person.

Then think of objects that symbolize what you want to comemmorate. For example, I am going to get the caduceus tattooed on my shoulder when I graduate nursing school this May. A friend of mine got the sheet music for the first verse of her favorite song tattooed on her inner thigh. As long as it means something to you, you'll like it.

Do not walk into a tattoo parlor and choose a design off the wall. These designs are called flash, and they are more like ideas for you to use as a jumping-off point. A good artist takes the craft very seriously, and he/she will want every ink job to be of the highest possible quality. As such, an artist worth seeing will take the time to sit down and discuss what you want, and personally design something that will be unique to you. If the tattoo artist is not willing to do this, then find somebody who will.

Whatever you do, avoid the temptation to get Asian characters. For one thing, it looks ridiculous. Also, unless the person who chose it is a native speaker, the characters often translate to gibberish no matter how good a Chinese/English dictionary you use.

the best thing to do is to look within yourself. what means something to you? what has a significant influence in your life? that is always the best factor in deciding a tattoo. i have a memorial tattoo and i absolutely love it. i also have a family heritage tattoo that i adore. you should think of a subject or a theme and go from there. DEFINITELY don't get a flash tattoo (the tattoos that are on the walls at parlors) because tons of other people have the same tattoo! get something unique just for you. and stay away from tribal!

Finding the right tattoo can take time. Its all a very personal choice and something you need to figure out on your own. People can offer ideas, you can find inspiration by looking on google images for picture of things you like or things that have meaning to you, bmezine.com or ratemyink.com but it all comes down to have a custom drawn personal and meaningful tattoo. You want something that you will always love and always be proud of.

Whatever you do, don't rush your ideas. Regret is not something you want to feel about tattoos. The chance to get a tattoo will always be there, so take your time and good luck.

Don't get a tattoo until you've thought of a design and waited for a year. Then if you still want that design, get it. Otherwise, there's a 75% chance you'll end up with a tattoo you think is stupid in 2 years.

Well here's the thing. It will be a part of you forever. So I would go with a pretty normal symbol ( i thought of a heart) a star, a letter, something you collect or enjoy and have enjoyed for a long time. mainly just something you wont look at in 10 years and be like WTF did i get that for?! and personnally i would get it somewhere that could be covered up and not hanging out if you ever have to be in a wedding or formal event. ya know?!

It would be a lot easier if you kneow what you wanted to get. It would be eaiser if you could decide either what you want or where you want it.

Just keep in the back of your mind that you're looking.
Be aware of symbols and pictures that you see.
If you're constantly looking, you'll know it when you see it.
I know I did.
