If you want red (or if your hair is very dark and you want red highlights where the greys are), try henna! It is extremely gentle, and can add shine and body to hair, as well as making it stronger.

Going to a professional won't necessarily be better for you. True, they are trained in the proper application of color, but the dyes and developers they use are just as harsh as the stuff you buy at Sallys or get in a box.

Your hair sounds a lot like mine. Mine is very fine, and started going grey when I was 14. I've dyed it since then, and have used everything from Punky Color (red, pink, purple, blue, etc), to standard box dyes, to temporary dyes (which are never really temporary - they just fade in a really ugly way), to "professional" dyes from Sallys. I've had my hair professionally dyed, and it was the worst!! The color didn't turn out all that great, and it wrecked my hair. Henna is the only thing I have used that is truly gentle.
