Because of the sinus drainage that is running down your throat triggers that reflex.

I'm not so sure but try pulling back your lower jaw when you lay down, keep it behind the upper teeth.

Some people when lying down, their lower jaw goes out more. This causes most cases of snoring and inability to breathe properly when sleeping, this position occurs when the back of the head is alinged parallel to the back the spine (When sleeping).

It restricts the wind pipe in such a position, so snoring and coughs might be a natural instict reaction to breathe properly. Try sleeping sideways, and tilt the pillow against the head of the bed so that it's in a slight 'sitting' position rather than laying flat down.

It's probably post-nasal drip from your sinuses down the back of your throat. Maybe you have allergies and need an antihistamine. I have the same problem due to allergies and I use Claritin before bedtime and I also use a saline nasal spray. These two seem to calm the coughing down.

You might have post nasal drip which will run down in the back of your throat and tickles. Blow your nose before you lay down and see if that works. You also should have your sinuses checked out through an X-ray and see if there's an infection.
