Cheese works well. The soft cheese you need to get is Velveeta, or something just like it. Don't just buy a hunk of cheddar because it won't stay on the hook. There are some bait companies that make a cheese type spread for trout, but good old Velveeta will catch them when nothing else will. Have fun and don't lick your fingers.

CHEESE
What do you do when your local tackle shop is sold out of salmon eggs? Make a quick stop at the corner convenience store. Most are open 24 hours a day, and they all sell cheese.

Most soft cheese products make great trout baits, particularly when you're targeting trout that are fresh from the hatchery. Cheese oils rapidly disperse with the currents, often luring hungry trout from incredible distances. Additionally, soft cheese can readily be formed around a salmon egg hook and molded into pellet-shaped morsels. When all other forms of bait fail, a small glob of cheese may save the day.

Basically, trout will eat anything.

The reason why fly fishing was invented was it was deemed too easy to bait fish for trout, so to add a sport element to trout fishing, they started to use the fly.

So the answer is, yes, they will eat Cheese

Cheese is a fantastic and much overlooked bait. I've caught plenty of trout, roach, carp, tench and chub on cheese. Cheddar kept fresh and moulded around the hook works great, make sure you keep it cool and in an airtight container otherwise it goes off and doesn't stay on the hook.

it's not the best bait for trout but if you make a cheese paste, a smelly cheese & bread together, mix & roll up into balls, this also helps so it stays on the hook. brilliant for chub too!

Yep! Use Velveeta. If you don't catch any fish you can always eat your bait, from the clean end.

Naturally it does, but if you want to be realistic, I would use a bait that is current with its' natural surroundings....THE FLY
