A male Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
incredibly protective, particularly of female owners
strong, but don't need too much exercise
smart
medium size (small enough for a small home, big enough to look hard enough that no one will want to attack you!)
brilliant with children (they have a high pain threshold, so they can cope with tail pulling and eye poking from curious kids!)
short hair that doesn't fall out too much
My first staff we had when my son was just a year old, and he would climb on top of the dog and go to sleep there. The dog would lay there for an hour or more, just patiently waiting. He would also allow himself to be covered with sofa cushions etc, and slept at the foot of my sons bed or at the top of the stairs, listening for anything "untoward". He was wonderful. Sadly he died at the ripe old age of 14.
And they are just such wonderful and loving dogs, and not ugly like some dogs either!
Oh, there is one down side, their farts stink to high heaven if you feed them meat and not dry food!!!

Not to active rules out Lab which is a really common dog breed. I would suggest looking into a Plott Hound. It is a type of blood hound I recently acquired one and am totally enamored with him! I would recomend a female as they are always smaller, but Plotts are VERY loyal (will be protective too) and they do not shed wich is nice. They have the stamina to go for days, but are fairly laid back pretty much all the time. they seem to be a pretty cool breed.

I also would recommend a beagle. I had a beagle as a child and that basically describes her to a T. There is one thing you need to know about Beagles though--they are not terribly loyal! So if the neighbor next door is nicer to your dog than you are they might just move next door! My parents dealt with this situation on a military base once. An officer's beagle kept on coming to their house because he liked playing with the kids and being petted, played with etc. After two months the officer just gave up and said go ahead and keep him! The dog just liked it there better.

I have a border collie that fits all of those traits. He's an amazingly smart, protective but not aggressive, active but not hyper, easily trained, LOVING LOVING LOVING 40lb dog. I recommend you look into the breed. I also have a border collie/springer spaniel mix that is an amazing dog. Check your local shelter, that's where you'll find the best dogs.

A beagle on the smaller end or a doberman on the larger end. Both very intelligent dogs, active and curious with the doberman for protective catagory.
