I have curly thick hair and have been using curling irons and straghtening irons since high school. It takes me at least 40 minutes to style plus my hair gets dry from repeated use. I am thinking about getting my hair relaxed. What was your experience with relaxers? How much does it cost to get it done? professionally?

i get my hair chemically relaxed regularly, which is about once every 4 to 6 weeks; it depends on how much my hair has grown. it does make your hair much easier to manage once you have it relaxed, but my hair used to be much thicker before i started getting relaxers. i kinda miss that, but it really depends on how much you want to change your hair. professionally, it costs me $60 each time. i used to get mine done at the jcpenney salon, but the lady opened her own business, so i go there now. once you have it relaxed, it's very important to keep your hair moisturized and healthy, otherwise you'll experience unwanted breakage. i usually use Affirm or Mizani relaxers...those two work the best for me. also, try not to use too much heat on it once relaxed, cuz that also dries it and makes it weaker and brittle. well, hope i helped and good luck!

Depending on what type of hair you have, there are different options: the "Japanese" relaxer, regular chemical relaxation, and a perm with no curlers.

I think the Japanese relaxer is great for thick hair. It straightens beautifully, leaves hair pretty shiny, and holds up to humidity. [Should be done by a professional; cost: $100 - $175]

If you are African-American, a regular chemical relaxer may be for you. It is best for naturally curly or coarse hair. It also is a great straightener and makes hair so much more manageable. [Can be done at home; cost: $5 - $10. Can also be done by a professional; cost: $50 - $75]

A friend of mine once gave herself a home perm but instead of putting in curlers, she combed her hair out and followed all of the other directions. Her hair came out soft and a little wavy (I guess it was essentially a body wave). Humidity would wreck her hair though since it was still a home perm. [She used a home perm kit; cost: $10 - $15; could probably be done better by a professional; cost: $40 - $60]

Just a little note, once you get your hair straightened, you usually have to keep getting it straightened at regular intervals. It can also be damaging to some hair.

Well I have been getting relaxers since I can remember. I am 35 years old now and have been getting them since I was about 5 or 6. I don't know much without a relaxer. I live by them...best thing on earth. I don't like going to the salons, so I just do them @ home. It is a little cheaper doing it myself. Well the cost may vary depending on your area. I live in Jersey where some salons have specials. You can get a relaxer for about $20 & up. That is with deep conditioning & dryer set, doobie...Salons like to wait about 6 weeks in between treatments.

I haven't had my hair relaxed but a few friends have. They did not have very curly hair, they had more like wavy hair so the result is actually incredible. PLUS, you have to remember that relaxing your hair will make it go LIGHTER due to the chemicals. This means that if you have dyed hair, it will go lighter. Natural hair also lightens but not as much. Curly hair usually ends up looking like a broomstick. I know this idea is NOT encouraging, but all people who had really curly hair end up with very damaged hair. If you want to got ahead with this go to a professional salon FOR SURE. The cost pretty much depends on the salon... it can go anywhere from 80 to 500 bucks..

I straighten my hair once a year with a procedure referred to as "jap straightening". curiously, they invented it. I have finished this because 4 years now yet I do have thick hair so i did not wade through any hairloss. My hair is "wavy", no longer truly curly yet when i do not try this, i look like the lion of the "Metro Goldwyn Mayer" on moist days. the approach itself, in accordance to the lenght, takes like 4 hours yet you're wonderful for 4 or 5 month. because i have been doing this for quite a even as, my hair, were given used to the conception of being "flat", which frankly, i like a lot more effective. each 2 month, i pass to the hairdresser and she or he massages my scalp with a clinical care of "Cortizone" to maintain it healthful and sleek.

The price is variable, approximately 100$, and it is to be carefully and professionally done in order to avoid major hair damage.
