The_Only_... Hit the nail squarely on the head. If you've been depressed longer than six months I'd hop to it and ask your family Dr. for a referral to see the best Psychiatrist within convenient driving distance. In my view a physiologist is the first line of defense as they usually find the underlying cause of the depression through talking and discussion. Often times they are able to help you and family members that surround you. If the problem persists the Psychiatrist can also pitch in to help. I've seen cases where both of these professionals work together. Best of luck to you!

The best natural thing you can do for depression is to get physically active. Go for a walk, go swimming, get out of the house and do something, anything, and it will ease the symptoms of depression.
If yours is a situational depression, know that with time, it will pass. If, however, yours is a clinical depression, consider seeing a therapist and getting appropriate treatment from a psychiatrist.

When I fall into a deep depression I need to develop a plan to get out of it. I find that developing the plan and then each little step makes me feel more confident and able. I still get anxiety, but the depression seems to life faster than relying on medication to kick in.

I think a lot of depression is caused by the following factors:

-) Religious abuse. This is when you are brought up very strict, & worrying about burning in hell forever keeps you unable to enjoy life because you can't do what you want to do. Or, you worry about others that are going to go to hell.
-) Personal abuse. This is when, whether from family, work, or school, you are made to feel worthless if you don't do things a certain way to please certain people.
-) Idolizing others. This is when, you see how beautiful, or good, or whatever that others are, you feel like you can never reach that level.
-) Hormonal issues. You have a desire to be with that certain girl or guy, or perhaps are looking one, but feel that no-one can love you because you are simply not good enough.
-) Monetary issues. You are broke, poor, depressed about having no money.
-) Combination of factors. This may be any of the above, or all of the above, or others not listed such as an addiction to drugs or other problems bringing you down.

Living life to please others will let you down, because people will let you down. If you want to be happy, you HAVE to, (This is not an if, this is a must) love you for you.

You have to be able to love yourself and be happy no matter what others say or do. Do not worry what they do. Just focus on what you can or can't do and be happy with that.

Do not worry about religion or hell or other issues. My take on it is, so what if we do bad things, we are humans. No-one is perfect or can be perfect. Don't worry if you do wrong, make a mistake, or be afraid to live and love life.

If there is a god, surely we will find out one day. If they destroy us for not knowing what is impossible for us to know as humans (they exist, or... don't, but how will we tell?) then they are not worthy of being served in the first place.

Relax, get rid of your tv if world news is depressing to you.

Hope this helps, but until you can love yourself first, in spite of what others think, or in spite of what they do, you will never truly be happy. You will always fall if you live your life, loving yourself because of someone else loving you.

You will always be depressed if you only live for the love of others. Love yourself first, then if others love you, fine, if they don't fine, but you can reach a point that you can love yourself and have a good time in life, that no-one can take away. The inner peace you feel, knowing you are a special person, in knowing that no-one can take this happiness away, is worth it all.

Religion can't make you happy, people can make you happy when they feel like it, but this varies a lot. Money can help you be happier, but the true happiness is being happy with you, not giving a care in all the world what others say or think, being unafraid to finally be you.

That is the secret to being truly happy.

One of the first steps in getting self help for anxiety and depression is the recognition of the symptoms and understanding that a problem may exist.

For the minor anxiety that is caused by the events that many of us face on a daily basis you need to take the steps to help yourself through these periods. Cutting things out of your life so that you aren't always busy and have time for yourself, going to church, time with family and friends, exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, meditation and so on.
