Muscles get knots called trigger points, which put pressure on nerves causing pain.
Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies it deals with muscles, pain and referred pain (and teaches what to do)

When I am answering this there are 5 good answers so far. I would use them for they are sound and wise. For me because of life experiences it is harder to trust others as I grow older. The many episodes of pain have added up and I would tend to go with allowing those who have caused pain to giving them more freedom to be on their own. Perhaps there is a maturity level they need to get to for them self. And when one naturally embraces the person who pained them before to help them for some reason old habits and resentments that are unresolved come up again and renews the pain. Even worse than it was before. The best way I think one must do is to separate from the ones who harmed them. The only time it is a good thing oh gracious Knight Rose it is acceptable to my mind is at the start of a renewed relationship. That is the truest test. If there is no change then sever the relationship. If however there is a true change let the process of friendship grow but slowly. This is a good question from one who has learned much in life. Take care. And it is good to good friends here to answer you.
