I have two different answers for you:
This is the one my mom used on my sister - she put the pacifier on top of the car while holdng her and said that there was a baby birdy that needed it. My sister was okay with that so they got in the car and drove away...with the pacifier on top. Worked perfectly.
This is what I did with my son - he was going through the phase where everything gets thrown on the ground because they want to see how many times you'll pick it back up. Simple, I just told him, if you throw that on the ground again I will throw it into the creek. He thought about it for a minute or two and threw it on the ground. So I calmly picked it up, picked him up and we walked out back to where the creek was. He helped me throw it into the creek and never whined for it once.
I think putting something on it to make it taste bad is mean. They need to know that it's gone and isn't coming back. If you throw it in the trash, they know it's in the trash can. If you put something that tastes bad on it, they will want you to wash it off. That's why I made it disappear. :)

Ok, my oldest had a nook (yes that is a pacifier) until she was 9 months old. We went on vacation and lost it then, after that she didn't need it anymore. I was lucky with her. My youngest daughter has a pacifier and I am trying to wean her off of it too - she is almost 12 months old. I do not want an my daughter to be an older toddler with a pacifier!! So, I am planning on just giving it to her at naps and bedtime. Then I will slowly make sure she can go to sleep on her own without it (I think young children do need to learn how to sooth themselves!) and then take it away. Or I will just throw it away - but I have to be disciplined myself to make any of this work! It is difficult to not give her the pacifier when she needs some comfort and it is so easy to give it to her. I think it't harder on me than it is on her. Good luck. :-)

I had a friend that cut a very small hole at the tip of it off. When her child didn't get the sucking action she wanted she just refused to use it anymore. You may get some screams and frustration at first, but after a night or two your baby won't want the binky/nook/pacifier anymore. Good Luck!

What my mother did with my brother: Whenever she would put him down for a nap, or bedtime, he need his "baba". She would ask him if he really needed it, and told him that big boys don't use them. So every time she put him down, she would ask him, and if he said no, he would throw it in the sink (him throwing it was important. That made it HIS decision - more like a real big boy). But if he said yes, he was allowed to have it for that nap. Sometimes, he just didn't want to let go. Eventually, he got to the point where he never needed it anymore.
Hope this helps.

I am assuming by nook you mean pacifier? You can toss it out anytime. You DO NOT have to listen to a doctor about that. And besides, he said the child COULD have it, not he has to have it. My first baby didn't have one at all, never sucked her thumb or anything. The second one had it until she was about 8 months old. The only reason I gave her one was because she had to have surgery and the doctor recommended it because we wouldn't be able to hold her for comfort at some points. It was one of the worst things I have ever done. I tossed that thing out and didn't look back. After 2 days she forgot all about it anyway. Yes she wanted it, Yes she fussed for it. She is a child. It won't be the first or last thing she has fussed for or wants.

If you feel that he's ready, just try to work it out of his routine. Maybe you could introduce a new toy or stuffed animal that would slowly take the place of the nook. Or you could just take it away and never bring it out again - in three days or less, I promise he'll have forgotten all about it. Good luck!

Ouch! It's a very difficult thing to ween a kid off it, at least that's been my experience, but I've noticed that most kids eventually just stop. And if not, it sort of "disappears" and a stuffed animal or something is given to the child to replace it. Yes there's some teats involved and it's not going to be totally painless but those are the things that have worked for me.

I think the doctor is right about he can have it till 2 . And you know mother milk will protect him from diseases because it improves baby s immune system but make sure you are not using medicines while giving your baby your own milk because they pass your milk too and side effects of medicine you are taking may effect your child too . So be careful you are not taking a pill that may harm your baby. And congratulations for being a parent it should be a good feeling although they make lot of noise :D

This is very easy... I use to be a dental assistant and learned this trick in a yearly seminar we had to take.. kids like pacifiers because they are easy to suck on and they are soothing...take a thin needle and poke two holes in the pacifier each day..it will eventually go flat..when it is flat your child will have a hard time keeping it in his mouth and start to loose interest....tell him that he is such a big boy he is too old for the nookie and little babies need it so they nookie fairy is coming to pick it up...put it in a baggy, tie a string to it and hang it from a tree...tell him the fairy will get it while he is sleeping...Next day show him its gone and in its place have him a little toy or gift and say look what the fairy left you because your such a big boy and gave your nookie to the babies...Give him hugs and kisses and tell him your proud...Best wishes!

Sounds cruel but using something that has an offensive taste will work. They sell baby products meant for this purpose. Or the hard way......cold turkey and just wait it out. It only takes a couple sleepless days and you can break them from it.
