I am their to bebuild the homes to help people. Not show you how to use a hammer and nail, use a power-tool, and lift the heavy stuff for you when I am in the middle of something!

This Cowboy helped rebuild 11 homes all for free for the poor, but I can no longer do it. The woman that come on the job just seem to ruin the momentum of everything. And, the jobs get extremely catty. Good Luck New Orleans. Comments?

Egad -- it honestly has nothing to do with whether or not the 'home rehab' volunteers are men or women -- just whether or not they have any skills.

I'm a woman -- I can do plenty of construction-type work... (And I'm doing it since we're doing a lot of our Katrina repairs ourselves...)

The problem is with well-meaning sweet and wonderful volunteers who are coming down to do real construction work but have never seen a hammer or a circular saw in their lives... We have had to have a lot of the work volunteers did in our own home removed and redone by professionals -- and we know plenty of other people who have too... Still others who had volunteers rebuild for them only to find out that none of the work was up to code and has to be ripped out. This only results in additional expense down the road (it costs more to rip something out and redo than it does to just do it right the first time!) and lots of headaches... not to mention the simply awkward position of having to tell somebody who travelled 1000 miles to do something nice that they're doing it wrong.

And that's just the volunteers! Not one woman on any of our professional Katrina repair projects yet... But I assure you there's plenty of cattiness going on during the work day....

All that aside... It was great of you to volunteer and get some stuff done for folks. Excellent and thank you.

As a female, I should feel ticked at you, but I don't really. Though I think you need to see that the women just want to help, I can understand that you went there to get a job done, and the women having no knowledge slowed you up quite a bunch. In my house, I am the go to "guy" rather than my husband to fix things, but that is only because that is what my dad did all my life. I think people just need to realize that even though society has given women an equal opportunity, they should still stick to the skills they have. I am sure there are plenty other jobs that could have been done. I don't think a situation that dire needs people that don't know what they are doing. It needs to be done NOW. I appreciate your honesty, and hopefully you won't get barraged to bad.

Fund raising ladies, good. Ladies that hold a hammer by the head, bad.

C'mon people, unless you work as a construction worker by day and your male counterparts accept you, don't come down to rebuild. Help with drives, or a soup kitchen, or something along those lines. If you don't know how to do the job or you can't, don't do it.

I am by no means a feminist, but still took offense to your comment. I love carpentry work and have built a home for missions. Any carpentry or mechanical job done around our house is done by me. I understand your concerns - but be careful how you say it because you could offend some very skilled and effecient female carpenters.
