My friend has a 26 year old son and he has severe depression. The problem is he does not have insurance so it is hard to find help for him. On top of all that his mom is starting to suffer as well because she does not want her son to hurt himself because she can’t afford to help him. Where can he get help with no insurance and where are there support groups for such problems.

Call your local Social Services Office. They are aware of programs for the uninsured etc. They also know where local support groups meet and exactly what kind of options are open to them in the county you live in.

Another possibility is to contact their pastor. Many denominations require a great deal of education in psychology and counseling for their pastors to receive ordination. Of course these are mainly the "old school" denominations such as Catholics, Lutherans, etc. The pastors are often aware of local church and community based programs available to help the uninsured and the poor.

Take 5-HTP. It is the herbal equivalent of an anti-depressant without all the horrible side effects. The NOW brand in the orange bottle is the best and cheapest. Here is a link to read about it:

You can buy this at a health food store, no insurance required. Or you can buy it online!

Nikki, I'd advise calling a near buy hospital and as to speak to a person in mental health services. If anyone can shed a little light on the matter they'd be the people to ask. If the folks your discussing are the least bit confused make the call for them. Defuse a potential tragedy if you can. Good Luck To You!

Their doctor should know what resources are available in their area. Or, the Health Department must know, too.

I know that here, there is a state funded resource that charges according to income. I used it for a while.

Made one heck of a difference in my life, too.

you can get some prescriptions from Wal-Mart for $4. Paxil I know for sure and it helps but the Paxil CR is like $30 without insurance and Zoloft is like $70.
