I have no doubt that religion served a purpose once: it "civilized the savages", was a repository for information, and helped people have something to live for during bleak times.

However, now it seems like people in the Western World have very little interest in it anymore, while some people in the Middle East have hijacked their religion to make it do their evil bidding.

Would the world be better off without religion?

You should look at Rome and one of it's major downfalls was that it lost religion. As Socrates pushed for reason and logic and lowered religion people accepted it for the most part, but it eventually didn't last. That's how Christianity spread, people were hungry for religion and Rome didn't offer it.

Well, most people in outside Western Europe are still religious - so the idea that religion is superfluous in this modern world doesn't actually seem to work. And even in Western Europe: while it's true that less people go to church, but a lot of people believe there's 'more' to life...

It would be better off with a different religion. Religion is the opiate of the masses and is useful to those who would manipulate the masses, be they Osama or Dubya. Like an opiate, addicts crave it. We need a methadone religion to take over from the crack religions that are causing the world so many problems.

I have to go with no also. It is a human characteristic to feel that there is something more. Something after this life. What exactly is up to the believer.Granted that Atheists believe that life stops after death and nothing more. I can't say they are right or wrong. Religion also bonds people. Gives them a connection.

I cannot agree that it once served a purpose. It may have served the purpose of the governments of the time to maintain control over the people but it was a great disservice to the majority of people.

It is the same now as it was then... only a service to those who want to control others.

No, because with out a way to reach God and a path that leads away from ultimate destruction all human kind would perish. The world does not want God but it needs God.

No the world would not be better off, people would be better off. This is the kind of thinking that causes religions to flourish in the first place.
