Keep in mind, when it comes to wine, what is "expensive" and "inexpensive" varies from person to person. This is why a wine sales person will always try to qualify you by price point and then make recommendations in that price range.

Keep in mind that not all brands may be available where you live either, which is why this type of question ~on the internet~ is not as simple as it might appear.

Without knowing how much you want to spend, I will share some of the sparklers I like personally. (I favor "brut" over the other sweetness levels). All of these are non-vintage (meaning they are blends of several years of grapes to maintain a "house" style).

Montaudon Chardonnay 1er Cru (about $30)
Nicolas Feuillatte Brut (about $26)
Oudinot Cuvee Brut (about $30)
Paul Goerg Brut (about $24)
Pommery Brut Royal (about $35)
Veuve Hennerick Brut (about $26)

I also personally tire of the parrotted "Moet" response. Moet is becoming the next big hip-hop lifestyle status symbol (and these are never chosen based just on merit alone). There is more to sparkling that the mass-produced mega brands.

If you truly want champagne (from France), you should be able to find Moet White Star for about $30 a bottle.

If your open to trying California sparkling wine, try Chandon Blanc de Noir. It consistently rates high and has a price point of around $20 in most areas.

Martini & Rossi Asti is excellent but even better is Ballatore. Even those who don't drink champagne will like this one! And to top it off - it's only $7-$8.

Martini & Rossi Asti. I prefer it because it isn't overly sweet, like most Brut champagnes, but it still works well with deserts and light entrees! Enjoy!

Perrier Jouet has a bottle for about $30. Pretty good for the price. They carry it at BevMo.

The kind of money you have to splurge on it, you are better off buying some of the excellent vintage wines. What do you want? Vanity or a good evening?

Moet (black label or rose)
black label is $30 something and the rose bottle is about $40 or a lil more.

Krug.

You didn't specify what's too expensive.

Otherwise go for a good (to great) still table wine for a much lesser price.

try some MOET...Some times you can find the real good stuff for less on a day like this...I found a bottle of Don Perignon for $37.99.
