I have had a chesty cough for over a week, went to the docs for the first time in 2 years today, waited 2 hours only to be told I don't need antibiotics ( I thought that if the cough was persisent, it meant an infection!!!) I have had 2 bottles of benylin (yuck!) over the past week but I still can't shift the cough. Any ideas ? Coventional or homeopathic remedies welcome!!

Common cough/cold/sneezle type infections are completely immune to AB's, unless YOU believe that it'll work, in which case it's a placebo effect. You could just as easily take M&M's, if you think they'll work.
Bed rest, feel sorry for yourself, watch cheesy daytime TV, keep warm and dry - that's all you can really do.

Musinex is supposed to be really good at breaking up the phlem in your chest. You can get it over the counter at the pharmacy. I have a bad cough like this and my doctor gave me a cough syrup with an expectorant and codine in it. I can only take it at night because the codine makes me so sleepy but it helps a lot and I don't wake up coughing.

The fact that the doctor told you that you do not need abx suggests that it is viral or a reaction to something (i.e. smoking). Drinking lots of fluids tend to break up and thin out mucous allowing you to cough it up. To much cough syrup can result in the phlem staying in your lungs and growing bacteria. You could also have a rebound effect and just make it worse. So drink lots of fluid and try to avoid things that could make it worse. Allergens and smoke are the most common ones.

howdy. What you describe feels like workout triggered allergies. The chest discomfort shows oxygen deprivation however the wheeziness and chesty cough are suggestive of allergies. you may desire to work out your Dr for a verify up as you may prefer lung function assessments, ECG and a stress try. allergies would be truly controlled with the suited action plan. stable success and that i wish issues would be regarded after out for you.

Get some "Mucenex" (don't know if I spelled it right.) I had a "horrible" cough once and it worked great! It's over the counter. Kinda pricy. But worth it. It started working in a couple of days and had it clearing up in no time. It's really good stuff.

Well what works best for me is" Vicks Vapor Rub". Rub it on your chest, back and throat. Also you could try a cool mist humidifier for night time use when you're sleeping. Hope this helps. Get well soon!
