I have been having flank pain on my right side on and off for two years. What are some possible causes? My doctor cannot find anything wrong with me. Is it all in my head? It is sometimes sharp pain.

I think you can rule out kidney involvement. This type of flank pain come with fever and chills your pain pattern doesn't fit anyway. Varicella zoster (shingles) has a rash. Rule that out. That leaves spinal arthritis, disk disease and muscle spasm. Muscle spasm is the most likely. It's not in your head after all, it's in your flank. If the pain is momentary or lasts a few minutes, ignore it as best you can or apply heat. If it lasts for 30 minutes or more, use one of the new adhesive heat patches available OTC. You can also speak to your doctor about this and inquire about the advisability of using Baclofen, to prevent spasm.

I had flank pain on my right side, with no other symtoms. Doctor ruled out kidney problems right away, that ended up being my problem. They sent me for a cat scan.

Mine was my gall bladder, I had it removed. The pain was like a cramp in my side and I would get up and move around and it would ease up for awhile. That was a small stone trying to pass. I had to has an ultra sound done on my gall bladder for them to find it. Please remember, if you have a problem and it's real, and your Dr isn't finding, go see another Dr, I had to. It was very simple out patient surgery and I was back to work, light duty, in about 3-5 days.
