People's car, or car of the people.
Fun fact: Original prototype was by Adolph Hitler (later refined by Porsche). In an era where only the most economic elite possessed cars, Hitler believed that all people should be able to own a car and additionally thought that a smart design could allow for reliability, enjoyment, and vacation travel. The name given to the car in 1938 was Kraft durch Freude (KdF-Wagen, literally "strength through joy car").

peoples car. Porche had the basic design already years before and when Hitler became the head of government, he gave Porche the money to design and build a car for the people - a car they could afford to own, simple to run, simple to fix. And Hitler named the car company Volkswagen.

It's wagen, not wagon. People's car. See http://people.westminstercollege.edu/staff/bknorr/html/history.htm for some of the history. For the connection to Hitler, see http://www.hitler.org/artifacts/volkswagen/

The name means "people's car" in German, in which it is pronounced [ËfÉlksËvaËgÉn]. Its German tagline is "Aus Liebe zum Automobil", which is translated as "For the love of the car" - or, "For Love of the People's Cars", as translated by VW in other languages. And it's actually volkswagen
