My family (me & hubby and 2 kids) would like to travel to Costa Rica to see my aunt.

Anyone know the best time of year for good airfare, what is the cheapest anyone has seen fare to San Jose, and what time of year I should avoid weather-wise. School schedule NOT a concern!

I don't want to let my aunt know until I've done some of the prelim. work, as she will get excited about us coming and I need to get things worked out first to make sure it is a sure thing before I talk to her.

Thanks!

If you want to avoid very high fares, don't go to Costa Rica in April. This month is their biggest for tourism, as it contains their holy week and the Easter Holiday proceeding it. The cheapest time to visit is during the rainy season (typically from mid-may through October or November) but the rain will sometimes cause some of the unpaved roads leading to some of Costa Rica's many ecotourist sites to become undriveable. I would go anytime from mid-January-March. It's in their dry season (and these months aren't the hottest in the season) and isn't incredibly expensive. Granted, it's going to be more expensive than the rainy season, but not nearly as much as in April. As far as rates to Costa Rica, I would recommend checking different ones online, either through travel sites such as travelocity and expedia or through the websites for individual airlines. I myself am going to Costa Rica next month. Hope you have fun whenever you go!

I have been to Costa Rica in the summer... it was hot but we didn't have bad weather.. so I would suggest summer. you can check on airfare sites and just put int different dates to see when it would be cheaper to fly

June-July is their rainy season. otherwise, it's very nice weather year-round!

usual holidays (Christmas, Easter) can see higher airfares. otherwise, rated are generally consistant. I've seen fares as low as $400-ish around September from NY or Phili.
