My 1-year-old male whippet won't sit at all. He's underweight, but is he not sitting because it hurts him?

Whippets are skinny dogs and appear underweight even when perfectly normal.

My whippet sits, especially when I have a good treat hanging over her head.

Greyhounds & their 'cousins' can not sit comfortably because of their structure. In fact, many Greyhound racing dog rescue sites reccomend that in obedience training, owners substitute 'down' for the 'sit' in classes - your Whippet is perfectly fine!

Is this a change for him - did he sit before? Greyhounds don't like sitting, either, it doesn't seem to be too comfortable for them. They'll sit, but only for as short a time as possible before they get up. If you're concerned about him, though and he has other symptoms of problems, take him to the vet.

Take your puppy to the vet. He might have a worm, he might have strained a muscle or hairline fractured a bone, you'd NEVER know. So, be the good pet parent I know you are and take him to get checked out. Hope all goes well!

Has his hips been checked? He may have hip dysplasia which would make it painful for him to sit. I would take him to the vet.
