One daughter has VUR (vesicoureteral reflux) and there is a 20% chance of her siblings having it as well. This can lead to serious urinary tract infections, and so on.

My question is would you put a 4 year old and a 2 year old through this test even though they have never had symptoms ? Or would you wait for symptoms because of that slim chance. We are talking that there is an 80% chance that they do not have it...

Thanks...

I would wait it out because of the slim chance. But, watch very closely for simptoms since there is a chance. When you start to see some symptoms, then I would have her take the test.

Well, coming from a parent who's daughter has VUR as well, I would say considering the children's ages, I wouldn't test until they had a urinary tract infection. The testing is awful and I wouldn't want to put my child through it if I didn't have to. If they have made it to 2 and 4 years of age without having any UTIs they probably do not have reflux. My daughter got her first UTI at 4 months of age and that is how we found out about the condition. Most children do outgrow the reflux as they get older and their bodies grow. I'm sure the reason the doctor wants to test the siblings is because there is a small chance that they have had UTIs with mild to no symptoms at all and they just want to make sure there is no kidney damage related to that, but there is such a small chance of that actually happening. So, I would wait, like you said, it's an 80% chance they don't have it at all. Good luck and remember it's your decision, don't allow yourself to feel pressured either way. Make the decision that is best for your family.

I think I'd just wait and see, since your oldest has it then you know the symptoms, keep an eye out for them. Then do the tests. There is no need to run tests if they are not necessary, plus insurance may not cover it unless the doctor orders it.

I would wait and see if they develop VUR. Just keep an eye on them. Try and watch the spices that you use. Too much spicy foods can
cause acid reflux.

for me that would depend on how serious the disease is after development and is the test going to help you to keep symptoms from developing or becoming worse if you know about it beforehand. if the answer is no, knowing about it beforehand will do no good then don't put them through it. if the test has the potential to help them escape pain or severity of the disease then i would find it useful.

I would wait, assuming the symptoms are easy to see if they do appear.
