too much age difference between a 20's and 40's
not enough in common with that age gap
gals have only so many eggs produced - eggs get old thus adding to birth defects as the gal gets older
guys on the other hand can make new sperm with every hand gesture

Mothers over the age of 35 have an increased incidence of infants with Down syndrome. The incidence increases with age.
The association between paternal age and birth defects is less well established. Certain disorders such as achondroplasia (a type of dwarfism) and Marfan syndrome may be increased in children of older fathers. As scientific knowledge advances, it may become a significnt issue. To date, it hasn't been given a lot of attention.

Looking up on this, it is an interesting question and here is what I found::
New York, April 12, 2001 - While older women run a higher risk of having babies with birth defects, it has long been presumed that men could have healthy children at any age. Think again. A new study now shows that older fathers are far more likely to have children with schizophrenia, while the age of the mother appears to have no influence on the likelihood of her offspring developing this devastating disease.

Here is another good article I found for you.

I wouldn't worry about what other people think as long as you and your partner are happy who care what they think!

It really is a factor of the woman's age. Men reproduce sperm up until the day they die. So, their sperm is usually pretty healthy. Women are born with a certain amount of eggs. Usually one egg is released each month for fertilization. Unlike men, women do not reproduce new eggs. You get what you are born with and that's it. Now.......the older a woman gets, the older her eggs get. The older the egg, then the increased chance of something being wrong with it. Which in turn, can cause birth defects. That's why the risks are increased after the age of 32.

i think it's great that the woman is in her 20's and the guy in his 40's. as a guy in his 40's i think it's safe to say that men mature at a slower rate than women (the difference between men and boys is the size of their toys). 40's is not too old for the spermies, though later on sperm do age and may become slower swimmers. plenty of older men have had healthy babies - hugh hefner, tony randall, etc.

The birth defects are due to the age and generally less than optimal health of the mother. Women in their 50's can and have had perfectly healthy babies, its all about their health.
The age of the man has nothing to do with anything.
I dont see anything wrong with two adults of any age being together.

I have heard on shows like Dateline, etc., that they have done studies, and the man's sperm CAN carry some defects if he is older.

they are always referring to the MOTHERS age...not the fathers....iin terms of birth defects and age . If the father is so old that the sperm are not viable (about ...70+yrs old or so) there would be no conception....
