keep saying taekwondo is a waste of time and is not effective
firstly you have not even took the art so you cannot say that its not effective
as our instructor says all styles has its ups and downs and he said never to slag off a style differnt to yours
secondly there are mcdojangs but there are some bastar** who give it a bad name
and tkd is effective just beacuse the minority of schools and teachings are a bit crap that doesnt count for the minority

thank u
ps every style is great as we our martial artists

First of all, not everyone says that it is a waste of time. If you look back at the questions regarding Tae Kwon Do, you will likely see the same people over and over again. I don't believe they speak for the majority.

Second, you are right about there being mcdojangs that give the art a bad reputation. Unfortunately, even one bad can outweigh many good. Look at police officers and teachers. 99% of them are busting their butts and doing the best they can. It's the 1% that get in the papers that everyone talks about. And since they are the only ones people are talking about, the majority of the talk is negative.

Third, believe me, I know where you are coming from. I've studied Tae Kwon Do at a McDojang and I've studied Wushu at a school that definitely taught us how to fight. The same people who say that TKD can't be used for fighting would say the same about Wushu, but just like TKD, there are schools out there that still teach the self defense aspect along with the sport.

Some people are very passionate about martial arts. Just like religion or politics, people defend their position. "I believe in _____ and if you don't then you are wrong. Because, if you are not wrong, then I am wrong and I don't want to be wrong".

I feel your pain.
Go to my profile, and look at one of my previous questions where I go on a long rant about why everyone seems to bash on TKD. Most of the answers I got were very positive and realistic and actually agreed with me. Only two people said outright that TKD sucked.

I think every martial arts would probably get slag of some kind; I even read some moron's comment that krav maga was "useless."
So, if people bash on KRAV MAGA as "useless" (Hello? It was designed by Israeli soldiers for maximum hand-to-hand combat efficiency!) ...then think how much more they will do so for Tae Kwon Do and other arts.
Actually, I think it's because of Tae Kwon Do's popularity that it's received such a bad name. It is very easy to commercialize.

go to http://www.jenningscc.com/TaeKwonDo/Links.htm for an EXCELLENT and pragmatic guide to TKD. You'll get a lot of good laughs out of it too; the guy who created that website is funny!

the true test of a fighting style is to fight outside the training hall. I am not advocating being a bully. I am just stating that until you have proven it to yourself, everyone is full of sh!t.

being perfect at Kata does not equal perfection in fights.

tournaments are not fights. it is about one person out doing the other in combinations within a firm set of rules.

even my beloved Muay Thai, being quite brutal in the rind, is defined by its rules.

the true test of a person and their style comes only from fighting the unknown enemy, without the safe rules of the dojo/gym.

this is a universal truth. no matter if you have 21 years of experience like myself. you can NEVER know for sure how awesome you are, or how effective your style is until you have passed through the uncertainty of fighting for real.

have you been in fights and used it?

the effect is enlightenment. and you soon know what works and what doesnt.

it is just like being taught first aid, it is not until you save a life that you truly know that you know it AND CAN USE IT.
I have saved a life, so I know that that both the first aid I was taught IS effective, and I CAN USE IT EFFECTIVELY. so to is martial arts. (if you cant see this relationship you are doomed to McDojo)

so any comments I make about TKD are aimed to get everyone thinking about themselves, and can you really walk the walk, or do you all just talk the talk.

have you tested your art? or believed the belt equals truth?

there is no shame in realising your style is less than effective. the only shame is waiting 10 years to find out it may be useless outside of trophy hunting.

I have been tested many times, and know what works and what doesnt. this trial by fire has helped to created a more realistic view of everything martial. some thing work, many things are marketed as working when they will never.

and at the end of the day, why train a technique that will never be useful in protection? but I know that many love to preform, and love tradition for traditions sake.

amen. sermon over.

People have experienced and heard about TKD not being an effective martial art so they eventually say that all TKD schools are this way. TKD is effective just mind what moves you pull off.

I know tae kwon do is effective . I've seen one of my friends use it in a real fight. I personally don't practice it, but have no problems with those that do. I see it as another one of the arts that has become over commercialized though. That is due to bad teachers, not the students who try to really learn the art.

I agree with you too man kung fu is a very great style but due to a different set of problems it has lost much respect in the martial arts community due to ignorance.

Person who said, about other style is waste not effective. They are not open mind. They only see what is outside. You can never tell anyone what colour is Black; if they have never seen Black before. We can only see, hear, touch, and taste.
Some power are use by internal breathing (for healing, and strike ). You can not tell these people what is it. They never open up there mind. Until they feel it, may be they are to old to learn.

Basically ignorance & bias. Many people only know about WTF style TKD which is heavily sport oriented. Some seem to feel the need to disparage other arts to make theirs look better. Those people don't deserve to be called Martial Artists.

because 90% of TKD studios are McDojangs, gives TKD a bad name and for that I am sorry.
