Depends on how you define "husky".
"Husky" can refer to any Northern, Spitz type dog...
Since the term "Husky" is thought to have originated as a mispronunciation of the word "Esky" (white-man slang for the Eskimo), this definition would fit, and, yes, Malamutes could be considered a type of "Husky" dog.
However, there is only one (AKC) recognized breed of dog with the term "Husky" in the name -- the Siberian husky. Since many people shorten this to "Husky" (Note that I am not one of them), they would tell you that the "Husky" is different from the Malamute.
Of course, it's important to recognize that there are several other breeds of dog with "husky" in their name, i.e. -- Greenland Huskies, Alaskan Huskies, MacKenzie River Huskies, etc. Though they aren't recognized, they do exist...these dogs are also northern, spitz-type dogs (except some Alaskan huskies), which would make me think of the first definition of the term.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but there it is.

No, the malamute and the husky are different. Alaskan malamutes are huge dogs, often weighing 100+. The Siberian husky is a more medium sized dog, weighing 40-50 pounds.
But they are both northern breeds whose main purpose was to pull sleds through the snow. The difference is that the Siberian huskies specialized in speed because they're smaller and faster, but the malamutes were more for strength in pulling very heavy loads over long distances. They're not fast or smart, but they have a lot of strength.

Alaskan malamutes originated from Alaska and Siberian huskies originated from Siberia two different evolutionary tracks but both are great in the snow and mostly used for sleds or as another type of working class dog, malamutes , however, are almost twice the size of a husky.

We had a Malamute a long time ago (i bought him for my husband's 18th birthday before we were married). He lived a nice long 14 1/2 years. The Malamutes were developed by the Malamut Eskimos in Alaska, thus the name they have today. The normal colors are gray & white or black & white and solid white (which is not preferred and what we had) they are larger than the Husky and i've always liked them better. Ours was great even though he didn't have papers. It turned out he was from a backyard breeder and we kinda got scammed on the price (live & learn! hey we were teenagers and it was our supposid 1st purebred dog....) but he still was one of our favorite dogs! Had a great personality. His name was Fairbanks. Learned ALOT since, we've bred and shown AKC Great Danes since then. Shorter fur that doesn't get "woven" into your carpet! There are a lot of great Malamute breeders in the US. Sandy D'Andrea is one. She just took a Group 2 at Westminster this week with her current top special that was out of "Take No Prisoners" who was a REALLY great Malamute. She lives in NY.

Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies, Samoyeds, Alaskan Huskies, Eskimo Huskies these are all types of Artic Spitz's they were generally all brought forth from local native husky/spitz type dogs from the area (please keep in mind i said AREA which means what ever continent they were on), and wolves. They are not the same thing though, each one of these breeds are very diffrent in there size, shape, and need.

NO! they are totally different dogs. Sometimes from pictures in books they can look similar. Go to a dog show where you can see a bunch of huskies and a bunch of malemutes together. Then you'll see that they're really not alike at all. The malemute is a larger, bulkier dog and is more relaxed. The husky is smaller, build with a lighter frame and designed to go, go, go!

No. They are a different breed that is larger than a Husky. They also do not come in quite as many colors and they should not have blue eyes.

They are two separate breeds. They do look somewhat alike, but the Malamute is much larger.

They're similar but are different breeds. A malamute is said to be the closest breed of dog to a wolf.
