You either need to put the feeders in a place where the cat can't get at it, put a bell on the cat, or keep the cat indoors.

The only thing I can think of is put a squirrel baffle on the bird feeder pole, then the cat can't get up at the feeder. Cat's are ingenious though... I once had a declawed cat that would sit on the fence and leap at the birds & catch them mid air.

The only way to ensure your cat won't attack the birds is to either remove the bird feeder (not recommended since they come to rely on the food for survival) or keep the cat indoors. A cat's very nature is to hunt - especially birds and mice. By teasing the cat with the opportunity (then putting up obstacles), you are going against its natural instincts. Indoor cats live much longer anyway...

Feeders attract birds, so basically you are inviting them to come and get killed by the cats. Get rid of the feeders or keep the cats inside.

Keep them inside or supervise their time outside. It not only saves the birds, but stastically indoor cats live much longer lives.
Sometimes if you put a bell on the collar of the cat the birds will hear it when the cat tries to sneak up on them (hopefully).
