Do you think that this will ever happen? If so, how soon? How far into the future will it be before surgeons are no longer needed? Which type of surgeon will be the first to be replaced? Thanks!

Already surgeons are using robots. I suspect within 30 years or so the robots will not require surgeons although it may be longer before the surgeons are taken out of the loop for legal reasons.

Of cause robots replace a lot of segments of operation in the future but surgeons will be still needed for control and supervision. They maybe would change scalpel in more sophisticated tools.

Yes. It is even possible for the robots to act entirely independent from a human surgeon's input.
However I do not see this happening in our lifetime. Perhaps 6 - 10 generations in the future.

There is more to surgery than performing operations. Any monkey can be trained to do an appendectomy... it's knowing when to do one, or when not to do one, or when to do a different operation that is important.

Of course, surgeons need skills to operate. But they also possess a lot of knowledge and clinical judgment that comes from years of training and experience. These are things that go beyond algorithms and programs.

Robots will assist surgeons, but not replace them.

Only for the very poor, for very limited procedures. The capacity to paplate and get tactile feedback, and to easily interact w. anesthesiologist and other teamembers is lacking. The "Feel" is
just not the same. Also, from a liability standpoint, would you like
to be the robot-provider..?

I don't think so. First I myself wouldn't trust a machine cutting me open.

Plus no person is unique. You need an intelligence to deal with constantly changing parameters. How would you deal with unexpected problems that can occur in surgery? You need someone to accept the responsibility to treat a patient. The robot cannot take this responsibility but a human can.

I think anything medical is just too inconsistent to have a machine deal with it.
