That's great that I will get muscle relaxers and a night guard. But I DO NOT want surgery at all. If it comes down to it.. then I'll think about the options. But what about the pain in the mean time. I know doctors are very hesitant to prescribe these meds... but do they really have much of a choice if their patient is in extreme pain?

It most likely is TMJ...I have this as well... All they did was fit me for a splint that I would wear at night..(like a retainer of sorts)...
It did help a lot..Now it has been almost 20 years since I had to wear it, so methods might have changed.....

After two arthroscopic surgeries for my TMJ, I've learned a lot. First, modify what you are eating. Go for softer foods. Hold your tongue in between your top front teeth and let your jaw relax. Use your knuckles on your jaw, starting at your ears, scrape your knuckles along the side of your jaw, slowly, while opening your mouth. Apply moist heat, alternate with ice 10 min on, 10 min off, etc. If you grind your teeth at night, ask the doc for a night guard (or they are available in most drug stores). Muscle relaxers help the best. I know you want pain meds, but be aware that they are highly addictive and only mask the pain. Try naproxen sodium. Best of luck! Find an Oral Surgeon to work with.

There are several devices that are used while you sleep to make it better on you, and if you are really severe they can do some surgery for misalignment (rare). You probably will not get much pain medication but a muscle relaxant which will keep your jaws from pulling so hard, and a little pain meds for when it is really bad

Natural muscle relaxers are bananas and molasses. (too many cause the runs)

Popping is almost always muscles being tight.
Start with a massage therapist - back, shoulders, neck back and front and face

Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies for more information on muscles, pain and referred pain.

If it is TMJ they will look into fixing it. The first thing the doc will do is check for abnormalities of your jaw and throat and teeth etc and do x-rays if needed. If he feels it is TMJ he may send you to a dental specialist. I am not sure what else the doc will do at this point.
