Yes they hurt! Every hair in your body is attached to a nerve in the root, thus, when you yank out hair, it triggers the never and voila: pain!

Different people have different thresholds of pain though, so some people may only find it uncomfortable, while others find it excruciating. The up side is that it only hurts for a moment and then things tend to cool off. If you're looking for the ULTIMATE in waxing pain, go for a "California" wax. It's the complete deforestation version of the "Brazillian" and will leave you with less hair than the day you were born (at least in that area, haha)

Plucking (tweezing), Shaving, Depilatory creams and Waxing are temporary hair removal methods.
Waxing usually lasts for 3 weeks, but it is painful.

The first time it hurts, but it's well worth it. Once you go more and more, it doesn't hurt as much and the hair grows back much slower. It's a hell of a lot easier than shaving, so I'd say you should try it. Good luck! ;-)

Not near as bad as Brazilian waxes do though.
