South Lake Tahoe (California)...go to Sierra at Tahoe. Some really good slopes for first timers...it's where I learned. Not to mention Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

If you've never been to California, I suggest South Lake Tahoe. There is a choice from there to go to Squa Valley Resort (on north lake you can get packages that take you on a boat ride, give you a lift ticket, breakfast, dinner and return trip for about $160), Heavenly which is based right in South Lake (there are 3 bases to go up the mountain, best place for beginners is at the California Lodge) and you also have Sierra at Tahoe (thirty min drive from SLT) I've been skiing for 20 years (started at 5 years) and recently took a beginner with me to Heavenly. I gave the lesson to him. Their ski school I hear is GREAT. Book in advance thouhg. http://www.skiheavenly.com for info on ski school and such. There is an airport in SLT, however they take small planes, I'd suggest getting to SFO or Reno and take a bus. Pick what is cheaper... Busses from SFO to SLT is about $80 round trip, not sure about Reno.

Hope this helps. There are LOTS of great skiing areas out there. Check online regarding their ski schools, prices and bookings. Some resorts require you to book 2 weeks or more in advance due to them having so many students coming in.

Gear rentals are a easy in Tahoe. You can rent on line (I suggest it actually, you get discounts, go through the powder house if you go to SLT, 25% off is worth it). On average a beginner package costs about 25-50 a day (less with the online discount, price changes according to the package you pick). http://www.tahoepowderhouse.com/

Hope this info helps! Good luck on your adventures. You'll love it! Don't get discouraged if you have trouble. It is a hard sport, but you learn to enjoy it once you get past the learning stage.

Winter Park and Breckenridge Colorado both have excellent ski schools/instructors for first timers.
Great social scene at both locations as well.

Learning abroad is crap unless its one-on-one and they speak English as a first language! (i.e. nowhere in Europe)

Take 4 lessons at a real snow slope (not a dry ski slope). Like Xscape in Milton Keynes.

You can teach yourself the rest, its easy!
