All my life I have had very few dreams. I have Multiple Sclerosis (I am 50 yrs. old) and my Neurologist said I must be in REM sleep in order to dream. Occasionally I sleep so hard that I do dream, but only once or twice a year or so. I took a nap the other day and slept very hard and actually had a dream. How can I get to sleeping deeply? Are the prescription sleep medications safe for using occasionally for this? My Husband dreams every night and falls asleep within minutes of going to bed. It takes me a LONG time to fall asleep and I hardly ever dream. Please help. Dreaming the other day seemed to make me feel refreshed. By the way my MS is not bad at all. I have had it for more than 20 years. You would not know I had it unless I told you.

Your Neuro is right about REM sleep. And ordinarily, occasional use of sleep aids is quite safe. I hesitate to suggest OTC sleep preprations because of the MS. You really need to speak with your Neuro about the safety of sleep inducing products for your use. And be sure to report the benefits of dream sleep.

Everyone dreams, so do you. You just don’t remember your dream experiences. A dream is recalled most easily if we awaken during it or immediately after it ends. If more than a few minutes lapse at the end of a dream, we risk forgetting of the dream.
Also your dreams might occur in non-REM sleep. The people who dream in REM sleep remember more.
