To prevent heartworms you can get Interceptor, Sentinel, Heartguard, or Revolution. The first 3 are all once a month chewables, and the last one is a topical spot on. The Sentinel and the Revolution both protect against fleas too, and they all de-worm the dog. I personally prefer Interceptor for my dogs because it deworms more worms and it costs me the same amount as the Heartguard. The Sentinel and Revolution cost more than the other two, but when you figure in that it also takes care of fleas (like Frontline) they are not that expensive.
If your dog has heartworms, you need to consult a vet, and if your Yorkie is more than a year old you should get it heartworm tested before starting any treatment. If he is under a year than he can be (and should be) started now. You can either call your veterinarian for some, or you can order from a company but you will have to get a prescription from your vet.

Interceptor or Heartgard, they both work very well. The advantages with Interceptor is they have a smaller size dose available (0-10 lbs vs 0-25 lbs for Heartgard) and a broader range of intestinal parasite control. The Heartgard is often easier to give, though, because it looks like a chewy treat instead of a pill. There's also a generic version of Heartgard available this year if money's a problem, but it isn't chewable and doesn't offer intestinal parasite protection. I think it's called Iverheart. But DEFINITELY keep your Yorkie on something, heartworm disease IS real and also devastating. We see several cases every year.

interceptor has had fewer problems although yorkies are not one of the breeds reporting problems with heartguard (this is generally herding breeds with this problem). Interceptor also gets rid of certain stages of other worms which is helpful. I chose to avoid sentinel because for flea control I use only meds when necessary and i use topical because that means the IGR (insect growth regulator) is kept in the skin only and does not go through the bloodstream.

First your dog needs to be tested to see if he already has them or not. It can be dangerous to give the meds if he does. This is something your vet should be taking care of not you.

Heartgard is a good product to use, and what I recommend. You can get it at a veterinarian's office.
