I know a colleague who is sending me mixed signals. We do not see often .
I am having trouble understanding what the person thinks. That person's birthday is coming this week . I am wondering should I even bother to wish the person..leave alone sending cards and giving presents. I am not attracted to the person but would like to be friends . I just want to understand where do our relationship stand?
Any suggestions are welcome.

It doesn't sound like you have a relationship, it sounds like you are coworkers who seldom see each other, aren't close, and don't share a friendship. Saying "happy birthday" to someone is a common courtesy and won't be mistaken for anything else.

If it has come up in conversation that you know of this persons Birthday. A simple "Happy Birthday" should be enough. If you are not interested that is. If you pursue this Birthday with a card or a gift "you" might be the one who will be sending mixed signals back. Keep it as a simple verbal greeting.

I had a simillar situation with someone I knew from high school who I ran into and he was really rude to me and I sent him a birthday ecard and he didnt even bother to pick it up which told me he just deleted it. I wouldnt waste your time because someone who appreciates and respects you would be glad to accept a birthday wish from someone who cares enough to think that much of them to wish them a happy birthday.

I think a nice card is good. Get a happy birthday card that does not send messaged of love, companionship etc.

The relationship stands where you put it...friends. Give a card or not. My co-workers and I receive a cake and card...I don't take it that they want me.
