My friend wants to park his car up his back land which seems off-road?

But how do you do an official search on the place.

He is very confident but doesn't want to get caught if it isnn't.

If he owns the land then it is off-road. He can take a look at the title deeds to his property to find this out.
If he does not own it then who does? If it is another person then it is off-road, and you need their permission to park there. If not then it is the council, and I would imagine that if it was off-road they would not give you permission to park there.

If your friend wants to avoid road tax than the law says a road is one adopted and maintained by the local authority. If his car isnt roadworthy than a road is highway to which the public have access by payment or not.

Is it on private land that he OWNS or RENTS/LEASES?

If it's public land then it's "I hope I never get caught" kind of deal. Caveat Emptor. :)
